Week of November 1st - 5th, 2021 - 1st Grade Update

Welcome to November!

This week your child’s spelling sight words are: may, came, will

In Langauge Arts your child will be finishing a focus on L-blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl), and starting a focus on S-blends (sl, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw). Trying noting words/items with S + L Blends around the house with your child! We have also been focusing on nouns, and sorting nouns into person, place, or thing categories. Lastly, we are learning sounds with “h” as the second letter (sh, ch, th, wh). We have been using all of these sounds to help us read mini-books in class.

In Math we are continuing to work on subtraction, this week with a focus of using number lines to help us jump backwards to subtract. Your child is also learning how to add two-digit numbers without carrying. They are learning how to draw a line down the middle of the problem, to separate the two place values of the two digit number, making it into two easy addition problems.

During STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Math), we learned how to engineer a tent for Max from Where the Wild Things Are, using materials around the classroom. Your child will be taking this project home when they are finished!

In Religion your child has a focus of Sainthood, based on our recent All Saint’s Day Mass. They took home a mini-book that they can finish at home for extra challenge if you’d like!

In Social Studies we have been discussing how different school was long ago vs. today. There are many ways to engage your child on this topic at home, too!

Have a wonderful start to your November, and I’m looking forward to our Parent Teacher Conferences towards the end of the month!
