1st Grade News + Updates - Week of August 19th -23rd

Hello 1st Grade families,

We had a great first week of school, and I am looking forward to all the fun to come this year! Every week I will do my best to post upcoming weekly news and updates.

PE days are Tuesday and Friday. Please send your child to school in the correct school PE uniform on those days (pe shirt, shorts or sweat pants, salesian hoodie, and black athletic shoes).

Your child is going home Monday with their first Homework Packet.

Please help to work with your child on their homework every night. I’d love your child to complete everything on their own to the best of their ability, but of course if they need your assistance please feel free to help. The assignments for Monday-Thursday are meant to be done day-by-day, and not all in one sitting. This is to slowly help your child learn how to complete homework nightly like they will in the upper grades. There are spelling words every week for your child to learn. I suggest giving them a practice test a couple times a week, or just letting them practice copying the words down to a piece of paper. In addition, I will practice their spelling words with them in class. There will be a test every Friday on that week’s words.

The homework packet is due every Friday morning.

Aug. 19-23 Spelling Words: big, carry, eyes, face, far, hold

Math homework this week will reflect similar number concepts as their summer work. The first 4 weeks of school we will be reviewing number concepts they learned in Kindergarten. What is a number, how can it be represented, where does it belong on a number line/hundreds chart, how does it compare to another number? These are all questions you can also review with your child at home to help them prepare for the addition and subtraction strategies they will learn later on. I will be posting a great little activity below called the “Number of the Day” you could work on with your child at home. This does not need to be turned in to class, just something you can use if you’d like your child to warm up their minds when they aren’t at school!

Back to School Night is August 28th @ 7pm.

I will be covering classroom and school rules, procedures, expectations, what our daily learning schedule looks like, and year long first grade topics that we will be exploring.

I hope to see you all there!
