Summer Work for Incoming 1st Graders

Language Arts/Reading:

  • Create small rectangular flashcards to study sight words:

    • and, so, to, the, what, when, where, because

  • Read at least two books from the list below. These can be read with help from an adult!

    • Franklin Rides a Bike
      by Paulette Bourgeois, Brenda Clark (illus.)

Writing:

  • Write a short story (about 3-5 sentences - or more!) either about one summer activity or trip you went on, or a creative fictional (made up) story about summertime.

Math:

  • Practice counting numbers from 0-20

  • Practice writing numbers 0-20

  • Practice skip counting by 2’s to 20

  • Practice skip counting by 5’s to 50

  • Create flashcards to make fact families for the numbers 1-10

    • examples:

      • front of note card= 5, back of note card 3+2 = 5, 1+4 = 5, 5+0 = 5
