Dear Families,
Welcome to the new school year! I am really looking forward to spending this year with your child and getting to know your family! You will be amazed at how much your child will learn and grow this school year. Our days will be filled with many experiences and opportunities for learning. We will also work on activities building social emotional skills, such as how to positively interact and respect their peers, teamwork, responsibility, and contributing to a calm and productive classroom environment. That, along with a cooperative parent/teacher relationship, will ensure the success of your child throughout the school year.
As your child moves from second to third grade, there are many important things you can do to help your child succeed. You can engage in meaningful conversations with your child everyday. Take time (even for a few minutes a day) to read to and listen to your child read to help build their fluency. Help build reading comprehension skills by asking thought provoking questions or make life to text connections as they read. Practice math skills such as addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers, multiplication and division. Knowing their basic math facts (from memory) will help your child excel in math going forward in school. Encourage your child, when writing, to use capital letters and correct punctuation.
Homework is given Monday-Thursday and will begin next week. I will send a weekly assignment sheet in your child’s homework folder on Mondays. Homework is due the next day unless notified that it is due at a later date. Please send me a note if life is too busy to do homework one day. The work is due the following day. Use the weekend, if necessary, to complete any missed or make-up assignments from the week.
Please fill out your Parent Survey and return it as soon as possible in the manila envelope. The information you provide really helps me understand your child better.
My main focus in these first few weeks is to help your child feel comfortable, safe, and happy at Salesian. If there is anything that I can do to support your child, please let me know. You can email me at peet@salesianschool.org or leave a phone message at school, and I will return your call as soon as I can.
I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to be your child’s teacher this year!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Valerie Peet
